Join up to twitter here: http://www.twitter.com twitter is like a cross between text messaging and instant messaging except it's all done in public, so others can read your messages and join in your conversations if they want.

You might think, well why would I want to chat so everyone can listen in ? - well - the idea is say for example you were chatting about mobile phones, somebody that is following your 'tweets' (chat) may know of the phone you are after or have had a good/bad experience and they can let you know.

Another example is using twitter as a status updater or general chatting with friends to meet up.

If you are reading an article on another website you can add a web link to it and all your friends/contacts will be sent the link.

Another thing you can do is tweet to groups on a subject by adding a # (hashtag) for example if you add #somerset to a message - anyone looking in twitter search http://search.twitter.com can type in #somerset and any chats hash tagged that way will show up in results.
